Crowns and Bridges

Restorative dentistry seeks to improve the function and appearance of damaged teeth as well as to replace missing teeth. There are many different dental treatments which may be classified as restorative. Most common among these are crowns, bridges, implants, and dentures.

Crowning or “capping” teeth involves a reduction of the entire tooth surface and replacement with an artificial material, such as high-strength porcelain or a combination of metal and porcelain. When a tooth or teeth are missing, several crowns can be attached to create a restorative bridge.

A crown is a restoration that covers, or "caps," a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and size. It strengthens and improves the appearance of a tooth. Crowns are necessary when a tooth is generally broken down and fillings won't solve the problem. If you have a tooth that is cracked, a crown will hold the tooth together to seal the cracks so the damage doesn't get worse. Crowns are also used to restore a tooth when there isn't enough of the tooth remaining to provide support for a large filling, attach a bridge, protect weak teeth from fracturing, restore fractured teeth or cover badly shaped or discoloured teeth.

What is a crown?

If a tooth has been broken, or weakened by a lot of decay or a large filling, a crown can be fitted. Your dentist will match the artificial crown up to the shape and colour of your other teeth so that it looks natural and beautiful. The crown will last for many years, depending on the health of the tooth underneath.

What are bridges?

A bridge consists of artificial teeth which are permanently fixed to healthy supporting teeth on either side of the gap. It is used to replace missing teeth, restoring appearance and function. A bridge can be made from either porcelain, metal or both. When preparing a conventional bridge, the dentist needs to prepare the teeth on either side of the gap so that they will successfully hold the bridge in place.
