Bonding and Tooth Colored Fillings
Bonding involves the direct application of tooth-colored composite resin and is typically used to create a more attractive smile.

Is Bonding right for me?
Bonding can be employed to change the size or shape of your teeth, creating a smile that appears more symmetrical and space free. This single-visit procedure provides a fast solution for a more attractive smile and may eliminate the need for orthodontic treatment in some cases.
Tooth stains and discolorations that resist professional tooth whitening procedures may also be masked by bonding. Although bonding may not be as long lasting as porcelain veneers or crowns, in can last for a number of years with proper care.
Tooth-colored fillings are an alternative to traditional metal fillings and fall into two categories; direct and indirect. Direct restorations- is composite resin applied in one appointment. Indirect restorations (inlays or onlays) are made of porcelain or composite resin materials fabricated by a dental laboratory. These restorations usually take two appointments.
Are Tooth Colored Fillings right for me?
Among the advantages of tooth-colored fillings are:
Life-like aesthetic qualities
The preservation of more natural tooth structure
Optimal biocompatibility
Minimal risk of allergic reaction
No development of metal sensitivity.

What happens at the first appointment?
Bonding the front teeth typically requires one appointment. The dentist may remove a very minor amount of tooth structure to maximize adhesion of the composite resin to the tooth, depending on the dentist's bonding technique. A tooth conditioning agent may be applied to the prepared tooth, followed by the application of an adhesive agent and the tooth-colored resin. The dentist will contour the resin to produce the desired aesthetic appearance and expose it to a special laser or curing light to harden the resin.
For indirect tooth-colored inlays or onlays, after tooth preparation, impressions are taken of your teeth and a replica of your mouth is created for the dental laboratory. A temporary filling is placed onto the prepared tooth for protection. At the second appointment, the temporary filling is removed and the inlay or onlay is secured with an adhesive agent.
Care of Cosmetically Bonded Teeth & Tooth Colored Fillings
Teeth bonded or filled with composite resin or restored with inlays or onlays should receive the same meticulous care as natural teeth. Regular brushing, flossing, tongue scraping, and professional preventive treatments to maintain proper health and appearance.

Porcelain Veneers or “Instant Ortho”
What are Porcelain Veneers?
Veneers are a thin, semi-translucent custom laminate permanently porcelain facings that are bonded to the front surfaces of teeth to whiten teeth, close spaces, straighten teeth, or repair chipped or worn teeth. The veneers are only about 1 mm thick (the thickness of a fingernail). That same thickness is “shaved” off the natural tooth surface so when the veneer is bonded to the tooth, the tooth doesn’t feel or look “thicker”. While they're not suitable for every patient, veneers are the most aesthetic alternative for a variety of dental conditions involving the front teeth, including:
• Permanently Stained Teeth
• Diastemas (spaces between teeth)
• Crooked teeth
• Broken or chipped teeth
• Unsightly, stained or washed out fillings
Can change the size, shape, color, alignment, rotation…practically anything about a tooth. In most cases, you can have the smile of your dreams in about 3 weeks time! Veneers can return the natural, healthy glow to your smile! Picture of a lady smiling and click to go to Smile Gallery
Advantages and Benefits of Veneers:
• The procedure takes only two appointments
• Veneers are the most biocompatible material
• A minimal amount of tooth structure is removed during the procedure
• A "natural" look is achieved. Porcelain veneers are the most aesthetic restoration in dentistry
How are Veneers different from Bonding or Crowns?
We generally use bonding only to fill in small surfaces or cavities and repair chips in teeth. Bonding is a resin filling material that was used for several years to cover the front surface of teeth. A full crown is used when a tooth has had root canal treatment, or when a substantial amount of the entire tooth structure (enamel) has been lost.
How are Porcelain Veneers done?
The procedure takes only two appointments. On the first appointment the teeth are prepared for the veneers and an impression is taken. This impression is then sent to a lab where each porcelain veneer is custom made to the dentist's specifications and beautiful temporaries are fabricated to simulate your new smile so you can expect to leave the first appointment looking better than when you came in. At the second appointment the veneers are permanently adhered to the natural teeth.
What to Expect
Veneers can last indefinitely, depending on oral care. Because veneers are stronger than simple bonding, they are also more resistant to stains and chipping. Once veneers are applied, just treat them like natural teeth. You must maintain regular oral hygiene at home, and visit us for routine cleanings and exams. The important point is to reframe from oral habits that damage natural teeth such as chewing on hard things, and nail biting can also damage your new veneers.

You may have seen the Zoom! Process used on ABC’s Extreme Makeover. The complete procedure takes less than an hour in our dental office. The procedure begins with a preparation period followed by as little as 45 minutes of whitening. The Zoom! In office system works by a light activated whitening gel’s active ingredient of Hydrogen Peroxide. More information…
What causes tooth discoloration?
Teeth become discolored for different reasons:
• Frequently drinking coffee, tea or colas.
• Some antibiotics may darken developing teeth in children.
• Aging - the dentin underneath the enamel of a tooth gradually darkens with age.
• Use of tobacco products.
• Accidents – If a tooth has been traumatized, sometimes the nerve will gradually “die”, and the tooth becomes dark.
Is Whitening for me?
Our team will evaluate your teeth and smile to determine whether whitening is right for you. In some cases a different cosmetic procedure may better meet your expectations, but whitening is a safe, fast and easy process that is effective for almost everyone!
If you are thinking of other cosmetic improvements, such as crowns, porcelain veneers, or just replacing old discolored fillings, it may be worth considering whitening your teeth first, and any restorations we make for you can be matched to the whitened teeth, to give an overall great result.
Tooth Whitening provided by a dentist is the safest and fastest way to a whiter, brighter smile. Please call us for more info.
Crowns & Bridges
Crowns
Crowns (or caps) are dental restorations that are placed over a tooth when conservative restorations are insufficient to restore form and function. A crown fits over the entire top of the tooth above the gum line. Crowns cover, protect, seal and strengthen a tooth when a filling will not work. A crown may be made of white porcelain, gold or porcelain fused to gold.
At Bayview Village Dental we offer the service of our CEREC® (one visit in office manufactured crown) or a laboratory manufactured crown (multiple in office visits). It is also important to book regular checkups, at an interval determined through collaboration with your Bayview Village Dental health professionals, to determine your best course of treatment based on your individual dental health needs.
There are many situations that may call for a crown:
Large Decay – If a tooth has decay so deep and large that a filling will not stay, or if the tooth structure is weakened, a crown must be placed on the tooth to save it.
Large old fillings – When large old fillings break down, or get decay around them, they usually need to be crowned. It is important to crown a tooth that has been structurally weakened to prevent a cracked or broken tooth. Once a tooth breaks, it may not be possible to save it.
Cracked Tooth – When a tooth is cracked, a filling will not seal the crack. A crown has to be placed over the tooth to hold it and the crack together. If a crown is not placed on the tooth, the tooth will become sensitive to chewing pressure, or will eventually break. It is important to crown a cracked tooth before it breaks, because in some cases a broken tooth cannot be crowned and must be extracted.
Broken or Fractured Tooth – A tooth that has broken is usually too weak to hold a filling. A crown will hold the tooth together and prevent it from breaking again. If the fracture involved the nerve, Root Canal Therapy may be required before the tooth is crowned. In some cases, a broken tooth cannot be saved and must be extracted.

Bridges
A bridge serves to replace a missing tooth or teeth. One type of bridge consists of crowns placed on either side of the missing tooth to connect the replacement tooth or teeth to them. Another type of bridge consists of the replacement tooth attached to the adjacent teeth with wing-like appendages. Bridges can also be supported by dental implants.
A permanent Bridge replaces one or more missing teeth.
A Bridge will:
• Keep teeth from drifting into the space created from a missing tooth
• Help preserve normal function and normal bite for the jaw joint
A permanent Bridge is usually anchored to the teeth on both sides of the space from the missing tooth. This gives the bridge strong support. Brushing a bridge is no different than brushing natural teeth, but special flossing instructions are required to keep the bridge and surrounding tissue healthy.
A permanent Bridge is permanently bonded in place, unlike a Partial Denture (sometimes called a “removable bridge”), which is removable.
It is also important to book regular checkups, at an interval determined through collaboration with your Bayview Village Dental Associates health professionals, to determine your best course of treatment based on your individual dental health needs.
Crowns and bridges can be made entirely of tooth-colored material, metal, or a combination to provide optimal aesthetics. Some metal-free crowns and bridges incorporate stress-bearing materials to enhance their strength and wear-resistance.

Is a Crown right for me?
Crowns address aesthetic needs, restore tooth function, and enhance the overall health of your mouth. In cases where teeth have large broken down fillings, a crown can protect and preserve the remaining natural tooth. To enhance your smile a metal-free, tooth colored crown can also replace an older metal/porcelain crown. Following root canal therapy, a crown is typically placed over the remaining tooth structure to preserve aesthetic and tooth function.
Is a Bridge right for me?
In cases where teeth are missing, a bridge prevents the remaining natural teeth from shifting so that dental
health and facial aesthetics are not compromised. Bridges may also provide a permanent, non-removable alternative to removable partial or full dentures. Whether supported by natural teeth or implants, bridges can offer life-like aesthetics and stable chewing surfaces. The can be easily maintained by brushing with modified brushing and flossing.
What happens at the first appointment?
With both crowns and bridges, the dentist needs to shape the teeth to provide stable support and precise fit of the final restoration. Following tooth preparation, impressions are taken of the teeth, and a replica of your mouth is created for the dental laboratory to make the restoration. You and your dentist with carefully discuss the color, shape, and size of the crown or bridge. A temporary restoration is secured to protect the prepared teeth and maintain the precise space left by the tooth until the new restoration is fabricated.
If an implant-supported crown or bridges is the best option, the dentist evaluates the patient's health and suitability for the implant placement. The dentist may also proceed with surgical planning or refer the patient to a specialist trained in implant surgery.
What happens at the next appointment?
When the crown or bridge is fabricated, the dentist removes the patient's temporary restoration, and tries on the crown or bridges to verify fit and patient approval. Once the restoration is adjusted and approved, the dentist uses cement or an adhesive bonding agent to permanently secure the final restoration.

Dentures
When most or all your natural teeth have been lost, dentures provide many
benefits:
• Restore your self-esteem
• Regain your ability to eat
• Restore speaking ability
• Give support back to the lips and cheeks – giving you a natural and younger appearance
A Complete Denture is placed in the patient’s mouth after all the teeth have been extracted and the gum tissue has healed.
An Implant Denture uses implants as anchors to hold the denture in place.
A Partial Denture or removable bridge replaces one or more missing teeth, but there must be teeth remaining for the partial to attach to.
It is also important to book regular checkups, at an interval determined through collaboration with your Bayview Village Dental health professionals, to determine your best course of treatment based on your individual dental health needs.

Root Canal Therapy
When the nerve of a tooth becomes infected or abscessed, Root Canal therapy is the only way to save the tooth. A tooth can become abscessed as a result of deep decay, a cracked tooth, or trauma to the tooth. The only alternative to Root Canal Therapy is an extraction.
During Root Canal Therapy, the tooth is “numbed” (just like having a filling.) Then the unhealthy nerve is removed and medication is placed in the tooth to treat the bacterial abscess (infection). After the infection is removed and treated, a filling is placed in the roots where the unhealthy nerve was.
A tooth that has undergone Root Canal Therapy is more brittle and must be crowned to give the tooth sufficient strength. The tooth is cared for in the same way as other natural teeth. Brush and floss daily, and visit your dentist for regular preventative dental check-ups.

Implant Dentistry
Modern dental implants allow us to recreate your natural smile. Dental implants can be used in a broad range of situations, from replacing a single tooth to providing secure anchors for dentures.
Implants are one of the most conservative dental investments that you can make. Dental implants do not sacrifice the quality of your adjacent teeth and will allow you to speak and eat with comfort and confidence.
Speak to one of our dental professionals today to determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure.
Dental implants enable dentists to create healthy, attractive smiles in an innovative way. Used to replace one or more missing teeth, implants are another alternative to conventional bridges and dentures. In essence, dental implants act and look like natural teeth. And, because they maintain bone mass, dental implants can help prevent additional tooth loss as well as the sunken facial appearance associated with missing teeth. A dental implant restoration consists of a bio-compatible titanium screw and post topped by a crown bridge or denture.
The implant is surgically replaced into the jawbone where it replaces the natural tooth root. In a few months, the implant securely attaches to the bone (called "osseointegration"), allowing it to withstand biting and chewing forces just like a healthy, natural tooth.
Are Dental Implants right for me?
The most common indications for implant therapy are:
Replacement of one or more missing teeth.
Support of a non-removable "bridge" to replace multiple teeth.
Support of a removable full or partial denture
Patients who successfully pass a screening and evaluation can be considered as candidates for implant replacement.
The primary limiting factor inherent in implant therapy is the amount of bone available to receive and support the implant. If it's determined that a patient does not have enough bone to support an implant restoration, bone grafting procedures may be considered. Heavy smoking and some medical conditions may preclude the use of implant therapy.
What happens at the first appointment?
To determine the appropriate site for the implant replacement, dentists typically take x-rays. Some may prescribe CT scans as well. Impressions are taken of the mouth and then used by the dental laboratory to create a customized restoration. Many dentists fabricate surgical guides to simplify the placement of implants.
What happens at the second appointment?
At the second surgical appointment, the dentist makes an incision to expose the bone at the implant site. The dentist then prepares the sire to receive the implant. Once the implant is secured, the gum tissue is sutured back over the implant.
The implant is left undisturbed for three to six months to allow it to osseointegrate with the bone. If the implant is in a visible area of the mouth, the patient may choose to wear a temporary prosthesis during the healing period. Dentures may be relined with soft liners to allow patients to comfortably wear them during the healing process.
What happens at subsequent appointments?
Once the implant has been completely integrated with the bone, a post is attached to the implant. The dentist then creates the permanent tooth replacement.

Invisalign®
FDA approved Invisalign® is the invisible way to straighten your teeth without wearing conventional metal braces. Invisalign® uses a series of clear, removable custom-made aligners to move your teeth. Because you remove your aligners before you eat and drink, there are no food restrictions or problems with flossing or brushing. This technology is also more comfortable, avoiding the mouth abrasions that can be caused by the metal and wires of conventional braces. And this technology is also more convenient, since you are likely to spend less time in the doctorís office getting adjustments.
Invisalign uses 3-D computer imaging technology to design the complete treatment plan, from the initial teeth positioning to the desired final positioning. This 3-D imaging allows you to preview the final positioning of your teeth before you start treatment. Custom-made aligners are created based on the imaging information. Each of these aligners moves teeth incrementally and is worn for about 2 weeks. Typically, you will visit your dentist once every 6 weeks for ěprogress reports. Not every situation can be treated with Invisalign, so call the office to get an evaluation to see if you can be helped with this new technology
